United Polaris Lounge At Newark (EWR) Review: Still the Best in the US?

Updated on June 11th, 2026 at 11:40 am

The United Polaris Lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) offers a premium pre-flight experience for eligible travellers, distinct from the standard United Club Lounges also available at this major hub.

Until Delta opened its upscale Delta One Lounges, Polaris Lounges were without question the best business class level lounges in the United States. I recently reviewed the Delta One Lounge at JFK and was genuinely blown away.

Like my first visit here back in 2019, I returned this year during one of the busiest timeslots. The offering was still solid — but can United still compete with these new Delta One flagships?

Quick Verdict: United Polaris Lounge Newark (EWR)

A genuinely impressive lounge that still leads among US carriers on hard product and dining. The restaurant experience is excellent and the Signature Polaris Burger alone is worth planning your arrival around. Crowds are the main caveat — visit before 4pm if you can. Delta One has now moved ahead on overall experience, but the Polaris Lounge at Newark remains a very strong option before any Star Alliance departure.

Location and Access

Situated in Terminal C, between Gates C102 and C120, the Polaris Lounge at Newark is straightforward to find after security. Turn left once you clear the main security checkpoint in Terminal C and walk a few hundred feet — it will be on your right.

The lounge is open daily from 4:30am to 10:30pm.

Access is granted to:

  • United Polaris business class passengers on long-haul international flights
  • Star Alliance long-haul first and business class passengers departing from Newark on a same-day ticket

Status alone — including United Global Services or Star Alliance Gold — does not grant access unless accompanied by an eligible long-haul business or first class ticket. This is strictly enforced and worth knowing before you arrive.

When to Visit: Crowds and Timing

This is the most practical piece of advice I can give about the Polaris Lounge at Newark, and almost nobody covers it clearly enough. The lounge gets significantly busier from around 4pm onward, when the European departure bank begins building between 6pm and 9pm. If you arrive in the mid-afternoon you will find it genuinely difficult to take photos without other guests in them — which is exactly what happened to me on this visit.

The good news is that turnover is reasonably fast. From watching the flow of guests over about an hour, most people use a seating area for around 30 minutes before moving on — either to the dining room, the bar or their gate. So even at busy periods, if you do not immediately find your preferred spot, you will not wait long.

If your flight allows it, aim to arrive before 3pm. The morning hours are considerably calmer, the buffet is freshly stocked, and the dining room wait times are much shorter than the 35-minute wait I experienced during the peak evening rush.

The Lounge: Layout and Design

There is a large reception area with the familiar chandelier lighting common across all Polaris locations. I could not take pictures here on this visit due to the volume of guests passing through. As you move into the main space you will find large artwork on display with seating running along the walls.

Spanning over 27,000 square feet, this is the second largest Polaris Lounge in the network after San Francisco, though it is considerably smaller than the Delta One Lounge at JFK. Further in there are multi-sided couches in the middle sections, comfortable enough to settle into for a couple of hours.

Even during the busiest periods it was possible to find quieter pockets within the lounge. The floor to ceiling windows along the rear of the main room are my preferred spot — good aircraft views and enough natural light to make the space feel less corporate.

Facilities offered across all United Polaris Lounge locations are fairly consistent.

Despite being a number of years old the seating and overall design still reads as modern. Look closely and some areas do show wear and tear, but nothing that feels neglected. It has more of a corporate feel than a luxury retreat — understated and functional rather than warm. That is very much in keeping with United’s overall Polaris brand identity both on the ground and in the air, so it is consistent if not exactly cosy.

I managed to find a window spot with good aircraft views for a solid hour, which is the ideal way to spend time here if the dining room has a wait.

Food, Drinks and the Dining Room

The Bar

The dedicated bar sits at the far end of the lounge with around 8 to 10 high stool seats. It is a striking space — faux marble countertop illuminated from below, always staffed, and offering a full signature cocktail menu alongside the Illy espresso service. Cappuccinos come adorned with the Polaris star, a small detail that lands well.

The signature cocktail list includes the United Polaris Star, Supersonic Flight, Classic Red Snapper, Spiced Cider Manhattan and an Old Fashioned, alongside non-alcoholic alternatives. On this visit I did not have time to sit at the bar itself, but both seats on my visit to the bar area had guests who had clearly settled in for the duration before their flights.

The Buffet

The buffet occupies a beautifully designed central island space with additional counters running along the edge of the room. The selection rotates by time of day and is more generous than you might expect from a lounge operating at this volume.

For guests who are not particularly fussy, the buffet alone is more than sufficient. Options span light bites including chicken and vegetable wraps, cold cut meats and cheeses, a salad bar where you can build your own, roasted vegetables, hot mains such as salmon or stews, and a dessert section with fresh fruits and sweeter options.

The Dining Room: The Real Reason to Come Early

This is the headline feature of every Polaris Lounge and Newark’s version does not disappoint.

The dedicated a la carte restaurant is partitioned from the main lounge, properly set with table linens and a full menu that includes the same drinks available at the bar.

Tables are allocated on a first come first served basis — you request at reception, leave your contact details and are notified by both text and email when your table is ready.

I requested at 6:10pm and was seated at 6:45pm, a 35-minute wait that is entirely typical for the peak evening window when most European flights depart between 6pm and 9pm. If your flight allows it, requesting a table as soon as you arrive rather than after settling in will save you time.

I was escorted to my table from reception and promptly offered the menu with my first drink order taken immediately.

The operation has a well-drilled, efficient feel to it, designed to move diners through at pace given the demand, but without ever feeling rushed at the table itself.

The breakfast menu runs until 11am, after which it transitions to an all-day lunch and dinner service.

To start, I ordered the Butternut Squash, Pear and Bipp salad.

For a lounge salad this was genuinely impressive — the combination of sweet roasted squash, ripe pear and the dressing worked better than you might expect from an airport kitchen. Scrumptiously tasty is the only way I can put it.

For the main I went straight for the Signature Polaris Burger, which is something of an institution across the Polaris Lounge network.

It delivered. The patty had the quality and char of something fresh off a grill — proper meat, not a compressed fast-food puck, layered with a good cheese and pickle base and with additional condiments to customise as you go.

That is exactly how a burger should be served. The one caveat: the portion of wedge fries on the side was surprisingly small. Worth knowing that you can order additional toppings and sides including fried eggs, bacon and sauteed mushrooms, which I would recommend doing rather than waiting to feel short-changed by the fries alone.

The wait staff checked back twice during the meal and a further round of drinks was offered without me having to ask. As the skies darkened outside and the lounge filled further, the dining room itself remained calm and well-managed.

I did not get to dessert, boarding was approaching faster than I had anticipated. But I would order that burger again without hesitation.

Newark vs Chicago: Which Polaris Lounge is Better?

Having reviewed both the United Polaris Lounge at Chicago O’Hare and this one at Newark, I have a mild but clear preference for Chicago, and it comes down to two things.

The first is atmosphere. Chicago felt calmer on my visits, less pressured and more settled. Part of that is the passenger mix — Newark’s European departure bank creates a specific surge of volume in the evening that O’Hare does not have in the same concentrated way.

The second is the views. Chicago offers a dual-aspect tarmac view that Newark simply does not match. At EWR the window views are good but single-aspect, and Newark’s aircraft mix, while busy, is less visually interesting than the variety you get watching O’Hare’s traffic from the Polaris Lounge there. The fact is Newark is the secondary airport for New York city. For avgeeks specifically, Chicago wins on that measure.

To be fair to Newark, it has the edge on sheer size and the dining room at peak is arguably more impressive in its scale and operation. Both are excellent lounges and both sit well above any other business class lounge product available in the US outside of the Delta One Lounge network.

But if I had a choice of connection, Chicago gets my vote.

United Polaris Lounge vs Delta One Lounge: Honest Comparison

The question I keep getting asked is whether the Polaris Lounge can still compete with Delta’s newer Delta One Lounges. Having reviewed both, my honest answer is: not quite, and the gap is wider than the Polaris product’s age alone would explain.

Delta One Lounge JFK Brasserie
Delta One Lounge JFK Brasserie

Delta’s dining operation goes further. The menu is more extensive, the staff are more attentive and noticeably more knowledgeable about both the food and the wine pairings. That last point matters in a lounge restaurant setting — being guided through a menu by someone who actually knows it makes the experience feel closer to a proper restaurant rather than a very good canteen.

The biggest single differentiator is the spa. The Delta One Lounge at JFK offers complimentary spa treatments as part of the lounge experience. There is nothing equivalent at any Polaris Lounge, not even as a paid add-on. That is a meaningful gap for a passenger with a long layover who wants to arrive at their gate feeling genuinely refreshed rather than just fed.

United’s Polaris Lounge still leads on hard product consistency across its network and the dining room remains one of the better restaurant experiences available in any US airport lounge. But Delta One has raised the bar on what a premium lounge can be, and Polaris has not yet responded in kind.

Showers and Daybeds

I did not use the shower suites or daybeds on this visit given the time pressures of an evening departure. Both are available and from my visit to the Polaris Lounge at Chicago O’Hare, the shower suites are excellent, rainfall showers stocked with Therabody products, private and well-maintained.

I would expect the same standard here. The 10 private daybeds with Saks Fifth Avenue bedding are worth booking immediately on arrival if you have a long wait, as they are predictably in demand.

Final Thoughts

The United Polaris Lounge at Newark (EWR) remains a very strong lounge and, outside of the Delta One network, one of the best business class lounge experiences available in the United States. The dining room is the star attraction — book your table the moment you arrive, order the Signature Burger and plan to be there for at least 45 minutes.

The honest caveats are the crowds during the European departure peak, the single-aspect views which I find less engaging than Chicago’s dual-aspect tarmac outlook, and the absence of any spa offering which Delta has now made a meaningful differentiator. None of those things make this a bad lounge. They make it a very good lounge that has a clear and improving competitor.

I would happily spend a few hours here before any Star Alliance departure from Newark, and will do so again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can access the United Polaris Lounge at Newark?

Access is for United Polaris business class passengers on long-haul international flights, and Star Alliance long-haul first and business class passengers departing Newark on a same-day ticket. Status alone including United Global Services or Star Alliance Gold does not grant entry without an eligible ticket.

What time does the United Polaris Lounge Newark open?

The lounge is open daily from 4:30am to 10:30pm. The dining room switches from breakfast to lunch and dinner service at 11am.

How long is the wait for the dining room at Newark Polaris Lounge?

During peak hours (roughly 5pm to 8pm ahead of European departures) expect a wait of 30 to 45 minutes. I requested a table at 6:10pm and was seated at 6:45pm. You are notified by text and email when your table is ready, so you can wait comfortably elsewhere in the lounge. Request your table as soon as you arrive rather than after settling in.

Is the United Polaris Lounge Newark worth it?

Yes, particularly for the dining room experience. The Signature Polaris Burger is one of the better things I have eaten in any airport lounge. If your Star Alliance flight departs from Newark and you have an eligible ticket, this is a genuinely worthwhile pre-departure experience.

How does the Newark Polaris Lounge compare to the Chicago Polaris Lounge?

Both are excellent. I have a mild preference for Chicago O’Hare, which felt calmer on my visit and offers a dual-aspect tarmac view that Newark does not match. Newark has the edge on size and the dining room operation is impressive at scale. For avgeeks, Chicago offers more interesting aircraft watching.

Does the United Polaris Lounge have a spa?

No. There are no spa treatments available at the Polaris Lounge at Newark, either complimentary or as a paid service. This is a notable gap compared to the Delta One Lounge at JFK, which offers complimentary spa treatments as part of the lounge experience.
