A tale of two halves. The ground experience at Terminal 5 was poor, ending on a crammed economy bus from a remote stand.

Onboard, the Club Suite, the food and a standout crew member delivered one of my best BA flights in recent memory, better than some recent BA First trips.

This is what British Airways Business Class boarding looked like for me at Heathrow: standing on a crammed, stuffy bus with 140 economy passengers, heading out to a remote stand. If you had paid thousands of pounds for that experience, you would probably start asking yourself whether any of this is actually worth it.

The ground experience was not it. But once I stepped onboard, everything changed. This is my full review of the British Airways Club Suite on a retrofitted Boeing 777-200ER, flying BA213 from London Heathrow Terminal 5 to Boston on a late morning daytime departure.

I was unable to get a mobile boarding pass, and I knew exactly why before I even tried.

This happens every single time I have a new ESTA. Every other trip to the US works fine through the app, but a fresh ESTA clearance seems to trigger a document check at the desk.

If you have just renewed yours, build a bit of extra time in for this. As you might not be expecting to queue for a Business Class check-in !

Have you been caught out by the same thing? Let me know in the comments if a new ESTA always sends you to the desk too. Thankfully there were only a few people ahead of me at the Club check-in desks, and I was through in around five minutes.

Heathrow T5 Fast Track Security
Heathrow T5 Fast Track Security

Straight after Fast Track security at the north end of T5, there is an occupancy board showing how busy each of the BA lounges is. I like the idea a lot.

BA Lounge Occupancy Heathrow T5

The execution was off today, though. It told me the Galleries Club North lounge was two thirds full. In reality, it was completely rammed.

The Galleries Club North sits on the left immediately after North security, before you head down the escalators to the main A gates concourse.

It is typically open from 5am to 10.30pm, and access is for oneworld business and first class passengers plus oneworld Sapphire and Emerald status holders.

The breakfast spread was standard BA: a full English, fruit and yoghurt, cereals and fresh pastries. The food was never the problem.

Finding somewhere to sit was the hard part. You can cope fine here if you bring headphones, find a corner seat and zone out, and the terrace does give you decent apron views if you can bag a spot.

Thirty minutes was plenty for a quick bite, and I did not feel any urge to linger.

Boarding time for BA Heathrow T5
Boarding time for BA Heathrow T5

With an hour to departure I headed for the gate. By the time I got there it was quiet. Suspiciously quiet.

BA Club World Business Boarding

Because this was not a normal gate. We were departing from remote stand 10A, the first time I have ever left from a remote stand at Terminal 5.

And here is the bit that stung. Despite being at the gate 50 minutes before departure, the only bus for Business and First passengers had already gone. So I waited twenty five minutes for the next one, with everybody else, then stood the whole way out on a packed, stuffy bus.

BA Club World Business Remote Gate Boarding T5
BA Club World Business Remote Gate Boarding T5

This is my biggest gripe with airline boarding procedures in general. As a premium passenger you either have to board very early, or you might as well board very late. Anywhere in between and they bundle you in with everyone anyway, which rather defeats the point of priority boarding.

BA380 Cover WArm
BA380 Cover WArm

Tip: If your BA departure from T5 shows a remote stand or a bus gate, treat the gate time as earlier than it looks. The dedicated premium bus can leave well before general boarding, and once it has gone you are on the standard buses with everyone else.

But here is the silver lining. A remote stand meant a proper Avgeek bus ride. On the way out we passed not one, not two, but four different BA A380s. BA only has twelve, and two of those were in maintenance at the time. So that is a third of the entire fleet sat on the tarmac in front of me.

If you have to suffer the bus, that is not a bad consolation prize.

Stepping onboard this British Airways Club Suites 777 to Boston was a complete mood shift. A friendly welcome at the door, then I turned right into suite 9K.

This is the four-class version of BA’s 777-200ER, configured with 8 First seats, 49 Club Suites, 40 World Traveller Plus seats and 140 World Traveller seats. The Club Suites are split between a small forward mini-cabin and a larger main cabin, which is where I was sat.

BA 777 Club World Business Cabin
BA 777 Club World Business Cabin

There are no truly bad seats in Club on this aircraft, but I would avoid 7A and 8K, which are close to the galley, and the window seats in rows 12 and 17, because those have partial windows.

9K is a bulkhead. There is no real advantage to it, as the extra space up front just gets used for crew storage. If you want the quietest experience, the mini-cabin is the better shout.

BA Club World Business 777 Seat
BA Club World Business 777 Seat

The seat itself is the same Club Suite BA fits across its long-haul fleet, so if you are curious how it feels on a newer aircraft, have a look at my BA A350 Club Suites review to Nairobi.

The core seat is the same, but the A350 was built around it rather than retrofitted, and it shows in the details.

Club Suite features

  • 1-2-1 layout with direct aisle access from every suite
  • Sliding privacy door on every suite
  • Fully flat bed, around 79 inches (6’7″) long
  • 18.5-inch HD entertainment screen with the Highlife system
  • Side storage cabinet with a vanity mirror, plus power and USB charging
  • Full bedding set from The White Company, including a mattress topper, duvet and pillow
  • Club World amenity kit (moving from The White Company to anatomē at Heathrow from August 2026)
  • Self-service Club Kitchen snack area mid-flight

Despite the late boarding, welcome champagne arrived as soon as I sat down, which went some way to making up for the bus.

Waiting at the suite was a bottle of water, the amenity kit and bedding.

The new anatomē amenity kit

My kit on this May flight was still the familiar White Company pouch, but if you are flying from Heathrow now, you will get something quite different.

BA Club World White Company Amenity Kit
BA Club World White Company Amenity Kit

BA is replacing The White Company with the London wellness brand anatomē after almost a decade. The new kits were trialled out of Gatwick from October 2025 and arrived at Heathrow from August 2026. The White Company still supplies the bedding, so it has not disappeared entirely.

The new kit is a recycled fabric roll-top bag with a metal buckle, in one of four designs by British artists. Inside you get an anatomē moisturiser and a botanical multi-balm made specifically for BA, plus an eye mask, socks, earplugs and a dental kit.

It is a lot more colourful than the old pouches, and more useful afterwards as a travel pouch. If you have scored one of the new roll-top bags recently, let me know which design you got and what you think of them.

Signs you are on a retrofit

There are some not-so-subtle clues that this is a 25-year-old aircraft wearing a new cabin. The entertainment handset looks like it was carried straight over from the old Club World seat.

BA 777 Club World Business Retrofit

The toilets are an even bigger giveaway. There are three dedicated Club toilets, and despite the retrofit, BA has left them factory standard from the nineties. That is a shame on an aircraft that has otherwise had so much money spent on it.

They were kept in good order throughout the flight, though, with White Company products.

Doors closed and we began our taxi just past midday, a little behind the 11:40 schedule.

Service started not long after we reached cruise. For first drinks I went for a Johnnie Ginger, which was a rather refreshing cocktail and a nice change from defaulting to more champagne..

For the starter, I chose Seared tuna and avocado with tomato ceviche, wasabi coleslaw and a jalapeño lime dressing

This was very, very good. Fresh, punchy and exactly the kind of dish that works at altitude when taste buds are dulled.

For the main, I chose the Mascarpone cappellacci with fried basil, smoked aubergine and slow-roasted cherry tomato.

A simple dish, excellently done. Airline pasta is so often a gluey disappointment, so this was a pleasant surprise.

For dessert I asked for the chocolate and hazelnut praline. They did not have it. The crew offered me something else instead, which I accepted, and what turned up was a raspberry mousse of some sort.

BA Club World Business Cheese and Dessert

Fine, but I was still thinking about the praline. I ordered the cheese plate as well. This was fine, apart from the dried apricots. Never been a fan.

Two things stood out during that service. My champagne got topped up twice without me asking, once on the ground before departure and once during the meal.

And Gareth, the crew member looking after my section, addressed me by name throughout. These small things make a real difference, and they are exactly what separates a good business class flight from a forgettable one.

While these suites have privacy doors, you do not really need them during the day. You cannot see other passengers anyway, unless they happen to be moving about. The door comes into its own later, when you want to rest.

After lunch I stretched my legs down the back of the aircraft.

BA213 Economy Cabin
BA213 Economy Cabin

There are 140 economy seats on this 777. For perspective, a Ryanair 737 fits 189 people into a fuselage a fraction of the size, so this is positively roomy by comparison. Economy on BA’s 777-200ER is still ten abreast, though, so it is not somewhere I would want to spend 10 hours in!

World Traveller Plus seemed full.

BA213 Premium Economy to Boston
BA213 Premium Economy to Boston

The seats are showing their age, but they do look very well padded and comfortable, and for a daytime transatlantic I suspect most people back there were perfectly happy. BA’s newer aircraft have a slightly updated version of this premium economy seat with privacy wings, which this cabin did not have.

Back at my seat I asked for tea, which arrived with shortbread and a truffle. Very British, very civilised.

After a while I decided on a power nap, so I could stay up later on Boston time. Like Virgin Atlantic, BA gives you a full bedding set even on a daylight flight, which is much appreciated..

Now, the seat gap. On a previous BA Club Suite overnight flight, the gap where the two halves of the bed meet was wide and uncomfortable to sleep across.

On this flight it did not feel anywhere near as bad. Whether that is a tweak to the cushions or just this particular seat, I cannot say for sure, but it was a noticeable improvement.

With the door fully shut, this is a properly cosy setup. Almost your own little world.

I was not tired enough to actually sleep, but relaxing here was great.

Not that I needed it, but the Club Kitchen mid-flight had plenty of self-service snacks available for anyone who got peckish between meals..

The Highlife entertainment system is intuitive and solid across the board.

On a seven-hour transatlantic there is more than enough to keep you going. On the 12 to 14 hour flights, though, I always wonder whether the movie selection is deep enough, or whether you end up bringing your own iPad? Let me know in the comments.

As for Wi-Fi, BA gives free messaging to British Airways Club members. If you want full browsing, you are still looking at up to £21.99 for the flight. That should change: BA is rolling out free Starlink Wi-Fi for every passenger in every cabin.

The first aircraft went live in March 2026, but only a handful of 787-8s had been fitted before installations were paused over the busy summer. They are due to resume from the end of October, so for now most flights, including this 777, are still on the paid system.

About eighty minutes before descent, a lighter meal was served: pesto chicken and cheese on a homemade brioche bun, with a little side salad and a chocolate muffin. On the small side.

BA Club World Business Pre Arrival to Boston Meal
BA Club World Business Pre Arrival to Boston Meal

Very tasty, though, and much better than the sad breakfast toasties BA sometimes serves on this kind of flight.

Overall these were excellent meals, with warm and competent service around them. I really could not ask for more from Business Class. To wrap up, a hot towel came round at the end of the service, a small touch that I always appreciate before landing.

BA Club World Business Drinks Tumblers

Descent was mostly uneventful. Arrival into Boston was slow and painful, which is fairly normal for Boston. Immigration took about 45 minutes.

I was glad this was a daylight flight and not a late evening arrival, because a 45-minute queue at Logan after a long day would have been a lot harder going.

How I Booked This Flight

Avios reward flight with a Barclays cabin upgrade voucher

Avios90,000 (open-jaw return)
RoutingLondon to Boston, Tampa to London
VoucherBarclays cabin upgrade voucher
Cash£425 taxes, fees and carrier charges
BookedAround five months ahead

So what did this flight actually cost me? I paid 90,000 Avios plus £425 in taxes and fees for an open-jaw return, flying out to Boston and back from Tampa, using a Barclays cabin upgrade voucher. Despite the name, the voucher does not upgrade an existing booking. You book the Club World reward seats and pay only the Avios that World Traveller Plus would have cost, though you still pay the higher Club World taxes. You need reward availability in Club, not premium economy, for it to work.

The open jaw is worth highlighting. The voucher covers a return for one person, and flying into one city and home from another counts. That made it a much more useful trip than a simple Boston return.

Reasonable value, I think. Not as good as an Amex 2-4-1 companion voucher, which gets a second person on the same booking for no extra Avios. But if you are travelling solo, the Barclays voucher is a very handy way to get into a flat bed.

I could have flown Virgin Atlantic on this route, but five months out, Virgin’s cash and points pricing was astronomical. So BA it was, and on this evidence I am not complaining.

On the ground at T5, it can feel like a total gamble. Missing the premium bus and getting crammed onto a stuffy bus with economy passengers is not what you expect when paying for Business Class. The lounge overflowing while the screen insists it is only two thirds full did not help either.

But once you close that Club Suite door? The product, the food, and crew like Gareth genuinely hit above their weight class. This flight even outperformed some of my recent British Airways First Class flights, which says as much about the inconsistency of BA First as it does about how good this Club crew was.

I would love to hear your take on this. Does the boarding experience matter to you, or do you only care about the flight itself? Drop your thoughts in the comments below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the BA 777-200ER have Club Suites?

Some do. BA runs several 777-200ER layouts, and only the retrofitted versions have Club Suites. The four-class version I flew has 8 First seats, 49 Club Suites, 40 World Traveller Plus and 140 World Traveller seats. Check your seat map: if it shows a 1-2-1 Club cabin with a First cabin in front, you have the Club Suite.

What are the best Club Suite seats on the BA 777-200ER?

The forward mini-cabin is the quietest. I would avoid 7A and 8K near the galley, and the window seats in rows 12 and 17, which have partial windows. Bulkhead seats like 9K offer no real extra space, as it is used for crew storage.

Does BA Club World have free Wi-Fi?

British Airways Club members get free messaging. Full browsing costs up to £21.99 per flight on most aircraft. BA is rolling out free Starlink Wi-Fi fleetwide, but most aircraft have not been fitted yet.

What is in the new BA Club World amenity kit?

From August 2026, Heathrow Club World kits come from anatomē in a recycled fabric roll-top bag. They contain a moisturiser, a botanical multi-balm, eye mask, socks, earplugs and a dental kit.

How does the Barclays cabin upgrade voucher work?

You book a Club World reward flight and pay the Avios price of World Traveller Plus instead, plus Club World taxes and fees. It covers a return for one person, including open-jaw trips like mine. There must be reward seat availability in Club World itself, and it cannot be used for First.

Why couldn’t I get a mobile boarding pass for my US flight?

In my experience, a newly issued ESTA often means BA needs to check your documents at the desk before issuing a boarding pass. Allow extra time at check-in on your first trip after renewing.
