Air France KLM Best Flying Blue Redemptions

Flying Blue, the joint loyalty programme of Air France and KLM — is one of the most powerful currencies available to UK travellers. It transfers 1:1 from Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One, and Citi ThankYou Points, making it one of the most accessible premium-cabin programmes out there.

But with dynamic pricing introduced back in 2018, and meaningful rate increases applied in January 2025, the landscape has changed. These 15 redemptions represent the sweet spots that still deliver genuine value in 2026

Programme type Dynamic pricing
Transfer partners Amex, Chase, Capital One, Citi
Min. transatlantic 25,000 miles (economy)
Promo Rewards Monthly, 25–50% off
Fuel surcharges Yes (partner-dependent)

Unlike Avios — which still retains a broad-zone fixed chart — Flying Blue prices every award dynamically. The floor prices below are the minimum you can expect to pay at the best available dates; real-world pricing can be significantly higher if you are not flexible. With that said, the sweet spots below are structurally cheaper than the competition and consistently deliver strong value per mile when booked correctly.

January 2025 devaluation notice: Flying Blue raised minimum award floors on 13 January 2025. Transatlantic Business Class went from 50,000 → 60,000 miles one-way. All figures in this article reflect post-devaluation pricing.

Promo Reward floors are 25% off the minimum fare (e.g. 45,000 miles for transatlantic Business).

Detailed Breakdown

1 Air France / KLM Business – Transatlantic on Promo Rewards

This is the headline sweet spot of the entire programme and the redemption I would prioritise above all others. Every month, Flying Blue releases Promo Rewards — a 25% discount off minimum fares on selected routes. When transatlantic Business Class is included, you can fly the CDG–JFK, CDG–LAX, AMS–JFK, or AMS–ORD routes for 45,000 miles one-way rather than the standard 60,000 minimum.

With Business Class cash fares comfortably north of €2,500–€3,500 one-way in peak season, this delivers outstanding value per mile. Air France’s Business Suite on the A350 and 777-300ER is a competitive product with direct-aisle access from every seat.

Booking tip: Promo Rewards are released at the start of each month for travel typically 1–3 months ahead. Set a reminder on the 1st of each month and check flyingblue.com or klm.com. The calendar view on both sites is invaluable for spotting low-availability dates.

2 KLM World Business Class – AMS to North America (Standard)

Even outside of Promo periods, the 60,000-mile minimum for KLM transatlantic Business remains solid value — particularly to destinations like Chicago (ORD), Houston (IAH), or Los Angeles (LAX) where cash fares are highest.

KLM’s 787-9 and 787-10 fleet with the JAMCO Venture reverse herringbone seats offers direct aisle access from every seat. The KLM Crown Lounge at Amsterdam is a decent pre-departure experience, though nothing exceptional. The key advantage over booking with Delta SkyMiles directly? You will nearly always find better pricing through Flying Blue on the same KLM flight.

Flying Blue Gold and above members occasionally see lower award pricing because they unlock access to additional Business fare buckets not available to Silver/base members. If you hold Gold status, always search while logged in.

3 Air France Business – Europe to Africa (Johannesburg / Nairobi)

Africa is one of Flying Blue’s genuinely strong suits. Between the Air France and KLM route networks and the Kenya Airways partnership, you have remarkable coverage across the continent.

The CDG–JNB and CDG–NBO routes start from 50,000 miles one-way in Business Class — competitive pricing for flights where cash fares frequently sit above €2,000. Air France also flies directly to Abidjan, Cotonou, Dakar, Lagos, and a host of other West African destinations at similar floor prices. These routes see good award availability relative to the transatlantic.

4 Air France / KLM – Europe to North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria)

One of the most underappreciated quirks of Flying Blue’s pricing: Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, and the Canary Islands are priced identically to intra-European routes. That means a flight from Amsterdam or Paris to Marrakech (RAK), Casablanca (CMN), or Tunis (TUN) costs from just 10,000 miles one-way in economy — the same as popping to Copenhagen.

Cash fares to these destinations, especially in school holidays, can easily exceed €300–€500 return. For a UK traveller routing via Paris or Amsterdam, this is exceptional value and requires very few miles. Highly recommended for a long weekend.

Pro tip: This geographic quirk is unique to Flying Blue. Most other programmes (including British Airways Avios) place these destinations in Africa or MENA zones, which price significantly higher. This is a genuine structural advantage.

5 KLM / Air France – Intra-European Short-Haul

A simple, often overlooked use case: short European hops on Air France and KLM metal from as few as 10,000 miles in economy. The surcharges (~€50) are modest and a checked bag is included. Business Class within Europe (essentially a blocked middle seat and a hot meal) starts from 20,000 miles.

During Promo Reward windows, economy drops to 7,500 miles and Business to 18,750 miles. Best used for expensive routes — think Amsterdam to city-pairs where KLM is dominant — or for connecting onwards to a long-haul redemption.

6 Air Europa Business – Madrid to the Americas ★ Best Partner Sweet Spot

Air Europa is arguably the single most exciting partner in the entire Flying Blue ecosystem and consistently offers the lowest surcharges of any long-haul partner. As the Spanish SkyTeam carrier does not levy fuel surcharges, you pay roughly €39–60 in taxes on a transatlantic or South American Business Class award.

The miles pricing is also competitive: transatlantic Business from Madrid starts around 43,000 miles one-way, with South American routes (Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Lima, Santo Domingo) from 53,000–60,000 miles. The catch? You need to position to Madrid yourself — but for a UK traveller, a short Vueling or Iberia hop more than pays for itself given what you save in surcharges versus an Air France or KLM booking.

Transatlantic (MAD–US)
from 43,000 miles + ~€39 surcharges
South America (MAD–EZE / BOG / LIM)
from 53,000–60,000 miles + ~€39
Vs. Air France / KLM
Save €150–300 in surcharges alone
Note
Positioning to MAD required; no fuel surcharge on award tickets

7 Delta via Flying Blue – Europe to USA

One of the smartest use cases in the Flying Blue playbook: booking Delta-operated transatlantic flights through Flying Blue rather than Delta SkyMiles. Delta’s own SkyMiles programme is famously stingy with availability and notorious for dynamic pricing at punishing rates.

Flying Blue, by contrast, can access Delta metal at more competitive prices — and crucially, Delta does not assess fuel surcharges on partner award tickets, meaning you pay taxes only (typically €0–30). Economy awards start from 25,000 miles one-way standard, dropping to 18,750 during Promo periods. Delta One (Business) runs from 60,000 miles standard.

Access to the Delta One Lounge at JFK (which I reviewed — one of the most impressive business-class lounges I have visited in the US) when flying Delta One makes this even more compelling.

Pro tip: Delta does not appear in Flying Blue’s search tool on all dates. Use the calendar view on klm.com — it tends to throw fewer errors for partner searches than airfrance.com.

8 SAS – Intra-Europe Scandinavia (Lowest Miles in the Programme)

SAS joined SkyTeam in September 2024 following the Air France-KLM acquisition, and with it came a genuinely useful new partner redemption. SAS flights within Europe — particularly Scandinavian routes — can be booked for as few as 5,000 miles one-way, with low fixed surcharges of around €29 per sector including a 23kg checked bag. Amsterdam–Oslo from 4,900 miles and Amsterdam–Stockholm from 5,900 miles represent the cheapest redemptions in the entire Flying Blue universe.

Equivalent KLM flights on the same routes cost 10,000+ miles with higher surcharges. I reviewed the SAS Lounge Copenhagen during a connection — a pleasant, characteristically Scandinavian space if not quite world-class.

Note: There are reports that SAS pricing through Flying Blue has roughly doubled since pre-SkyTeam rates for some routes. The figures above reflect post-September 2024 pricing. Always verify before booking. SAS’s own EuroBonus programme may offer lower rates for SAS-specific routes.

9 Korean Air Business – Europe to Seoul (ICN)

Korean Air is a SkyTeam member and bookable via Flying Blue, offering access to one of the finest premium cabin experiences in the skies. The PRESTIGE Class (Business) cabin on the A380 and 787-9 is genuinely excellent — direct aisle access from every seat, superb Korean dining, and impeccable service.

The trade-off is that Flying Blue pricing on Korean Air is dynamic and can be steep; the floor price for CDG–ICN in Business typically sits around 89,000 miles one-way. The carrier also has blackout dates for partner awards. That said, when availability opens at minimum pricing, the value against typical cash fares of €2,500–€3,500 is respectable.

Worth noting: Asiana Airlines — which I have flown and reviewed (read my Asiana Business review) — is mid-merger with Korean Air and will eventually be absorbed into the SKYPASS programme.

10 China Airlines Business – Europe to Taipei (TPE)

China Airlines is a strong but under-discussed SkyTeam partner for Flying Blue redemptions. The floor pricing for Europe–Taipei in Business Class runs around 72,000 miles one-way, with surcharges significantly lower than on Air France or KLM metal on comparable hauls.

China Airlines’ Business Class features fully flat beds with direct aisle access across most of its long-haul fleet. Taipei is also an excellent gateway into the rest of Asia — you can often tag on a separate short-haul sector. Award availability tends to be limited to one seat at the opening window, so book early or be flexible.

11 Vietnam Airlines Business – Europe to Ho Chi Minh City / Hanoi

Vietnam Airlines is an underrated pick for Flying Blue redemptions to Southeast Asia. From European hubs, Business Class floors from 64,000 miles one-way with moderate surcharges around €200–300.

While Vietnam Airlines does not compete with the product quality of a Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific, it is a perfectly serviceable long-haul experience — and the pricing makes it genuinely competitive for those wanting Business Class to Vietnam specifically. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are both bookable.

Connecting intra-Asia in economy on Vietnam Airlines from Saigon to Seoul, for example, can cost as little as 13,500 miles with very low surcharges, making combination itineraries interesting.

12 Kenya Airways — Nairobi Hub (Intra-Africa & Indian Ocean)

Kenya Airways is the African jewel of the Flying Blue partner network. The airline operates as the primary African SkyTeam carrier and gives Flying Blue genuine coverage across sub-Saharan Africa and Indian Ocean destinations not well served by Air France or KLM directly. Nairobi to the Seychelles (MHE) is available from 12,500 miles in economy — an outstanding redemption for an exotic Indian Ocean destination.

Kenya Airways Business Class within Africa and on its medium-haul routes is a decent product with flat beds on the 787-8. The airline’s hub at JKIA Nairobi also provides a natural connection point for an Africa-focused trip. Cash fares in this region from Europe are often very high, making miles redemptions particularly effective here.

13 KLM Premium Economy – Transatlantic on Promo Rewards

A frequently overlooked middle ground: KLM World Economy Comfort (Premium Economy) on the transatlantic drops to just 30,000 miles one-way during Promo periods, versus the 40,000-mile standard minimum. Surcharges are around €150 — less than the Business Class toll. KLM’s Premium Economy is a genuinely good product with a wider seat, more recline, and an enhanced meal service compared to main cabin.

For travellers who cannot justify Business Class miles but want meaningful comfort above economy, this is excellent value — particularly for US West Coast routes where the flight duration makes comfort more important.

14 Delta Economy via Flying Blue – Promo Window

During Promo Reward windows that include Delta-operated flights (which appear periodically), the transatlantic economy pricing can drop to just 18,750 miles one-way with minimal taxes. This is one of the best economy values in any programme for transatlantic travel — particularly given that Delta’s no-fuel-surcharge policy means your total out-of-pocket is minimal.

Delta economy isn’t glamorous, but the savings are real, and you are freed up to accumulate miles for a future Business Class redemption rather than burning a large balance on economy cash fares.

15 Air France Business – French Overseas Territories (DOM-TOM)

Air France’s network includes extensive service to French Overseas Territories — Martinique (MQ), Guadeloupe (GP), Réunion (RUN), French Guiana (CAY), and New Caledonia (NOU) among others.

These routes price as long-haul from the continental European floor, meaning Business Class from Paris can start from 45,000 miles one-way during Promo periods. Cash fares on these routes — particularly to Réunion and New Caledonia — are exceptionally high given the limited competition (Air France is often the primary carrier), making miles redemptions particularly powerful here. The DOM-TOM routes are operated on full long-haul widebodies with the same Business Class hard product as transatlantic services.

How to Maximise Flying Blue Miles as a UK Traveller

Earning

Flying Blue transfers 1:1 from Amex Membership Rewards — making the Amex Platinum and Amex Gold cards the primary earn vehicles in the UK.

You can also transfer from Capital One (if you hold US cards) and Citi ThankYou Points. Watch for periodic transfer bonuses — Amex occasionally offers 20–30% bonuses to Flying Blue that can dramatically reduce the miles required for premium redemptions.

Searching for Awards

The hidden calendar view on klm.com is the most reliable way to find availability across the entire month without searching date by date. To access it: go to klm.com → Book with Miles → leave the date field blank → the calendar view appears showing availability across the month. The airfrance.com calendar works similarly but is reportedly more prone to search errors on partner routes. For partner airlines specifically, KLM’s search tool is the recommended starting point.

Promo Rewards Strategy

Promo Rewards are released at the start of each calendar month. Routes change monthly and typically offer a 25% discount with travel permitted across a 3-month window. Business Class transatlantic routes appear irregularly — they are not guaranteed every month. Bookmark flyingblue.com/promo-awards and check on the 1st of each month. Stack with a transfer bonus if one is running.
