12 Best Avios Sweet Spots for Business and First Class 2026
Updated on April 26th, 2026 at 10:08 pm
The Avios landscape looks very different in 2026 than it did even two years ago. British Airways pushed through a devaluation in December 2025, repricing many of its most popular routes upward. Fuel surcharges on BA-operated flights remain stubbornly high. And yet, despite all of that – Avios are still one of the most versatile and genuinely valuable points currencies available to UK flyers. You just need to know where to spend them, and more importantly, where not to.
I’ve been collecting and redeeming Avios for over 3 million Avios over the years. The sweet spots in this guide are ones I believe in enough to either have used personally or have seriously considered for upcoming trips.
Where I’ve flown the product myself, I’ll tell you — and where I haven’t, I’ll say that too. What I won’t do is list every possible redemption and call it a guide. These are the ones I’d actually book.
The one thing most Avios guides won’t tell you upfront: the best Avios redemptions in 2026 are frequently not on British Airways. They’re on partner airlines, booked using Avios transferred to Qatar Privilege Club or Iberia Plus — where you get superior products, lower fees, or both. Keep that in mind as you read.
TLDR: I have a short summary table you can skip to; if you are short on time !
Before You Book Anything: The Golden Rules
These aren’t caveats; they’re the framework that separates a brilliant Avios redemption from a disappointing one.
BA prices by sector, not by trip. A return is always double the one-way Avios rate, with no round-trip discount. This makes one-way redemptions — mixed with a cash return, or a separate redemption for the inbound — often more strategic than a straight return booking.
Always check all three programmes before transferring. Avios transfer 1:1 instantly between British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Qatar Privilege Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, and Finnair Plus. The same route can price very differently across programmes. A London–Madrid–New York itinerary in business class prices completely differently via Iberia Plus than via BA Executive Club. Check all of them before you move a single Avios.
Off-peak covers more of the year than you think. On BA routes, off-peak pricing applies to roughly 8 months of the calendar year. Outside school holidays and the peak summer window, you’re almost certainly booking at off-peak rates. Use BA’s peak/off-peak calendar before assuming a date is expensive.
Book at 355 days out for partner availability. BA releases partner award space — on Qatar, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and others — at 355 days before departure. For aspirational redemptions in premium cabins, this is when you search. Waiting until 3 months out for Qsuites or JAL First Class is almost always a mistake.
Fuel surcharges are the hidden cost nobody talks about enough. On BA-operated longhaul flights, the “taxes and fees” component of an Avios redemption can run to £400–700 per person each way in Business or First Class. This isn’t unique to Avios — it’s BA’s surcharge policy — but it genuinely changes the value calculation. Partner airline redemptions via Qatar or Iberia often come with a fraction of these fees. I’ll flag the surcharge reality on every redemption below.
Use Reward Flight Saver where available. BA now applies Reward Flight Saver to all BA-operated flights, capping the cash co-pay component. For longhaul, this caps the surcharge portion at around £395 each way in Business Class — meaningful, but still worth factoring into your value calculation.
The Best Avios Sweet Spots: Ranked by Value
Ranked by my assessment of value per Avios spent, accounting for: Avios cost, fees, cash price of equivalent tickets, product quality, and practical availability.
Partner Airline Sweet Spots
🥇 1. Iberia Business Class: US East Coast / Chicago → Madrid
Cabin: Business Class (Iberia A350) Book via: Iberia Club Plus Avios cost: 40,500 one-way off-peak | ~$115 in fees 2-4-1 eligible: Yes — with BA Amex Premium Plus companion voucher
This is the undisputed #1 Avios sweet spot in 2026, and it’s not particularly close.
For 40,500 Avios one-way, you can fly Iberia’s A350 Business Class from JFK, BOS, ORD, IAD, or MIA to Madrid in a fully flat bed seat, with genuinely good food, decent wines, and remarkably low surcharges. Cash equivalents on this route regularly exceed $3,000–5,000 one-way. The maths on Avios value per point is extraordinary.
Why it works so well: Iberia’s pricing structure for North America–Spain routes is significantly more generous than BA’s equivalent transatlantic pricing. The fees are minimal compared to what BA charges on its own metal. And if you hold the BA Amex Premium Plus and have triggered your 2-4-1 companion voucher, this redemption doubles in value instantly — two Business Class seats to Madrid for 81,000 Avios total, plus ~$230 in fees.
What you need to know about the product: Iberia’s A350 Business Class features fully flat beds in a 1-2-1 configuration, meaning every seat has direct aisle access. The catering is genuinely Spanish — proper ibérico, good wines from Spanish regions — and service quality has improved significantly in recent years. It isn’t Qsuites or JAL First, but for 40,500 Avios with minimal fees, it doesn’t need to be.
Availability: Better than most people expect. Iberia tends to release generous award space, particularly on midweek departures and shoulder season dates. Search directly on iberia.com rather than ba.com — BA’s search engine doesn’t always surface Iberia availability accurately.
Booking tip: Transfer Avios to Iberia Plus first, then book on iberia.com. The transfer is instant. Do not book via ba.com — you’ll pay BA-level fees on an Iberia-operated flight, which eliminates the primary reason this redemption is #1 on this list.
Iberia has made huge strides in their product and catering in particular ( now with world famous DoCo ), you can see the difference between my Iberia Business Class to New York trip report & Iberia Business Class to Santiago Chile a few years prior to this.
🥈 2. Qatar Airways Qsuites: Europe → Australia / New Zealand
Cabin: Qsuites Business Class Book via: Qatar Privilege Club Avios cost: 90,000 one-way | Minimal surcharges Route highlight: London/Paris/Frankfurt → Doha → Auckland (world’s longest business class flight)
Qsuites is the best business class product in the world. That’s not a controversial statement anymore — it’s the industry consensus, and it’s earned. The double bed configuration, the closing doors, the privacy, the catering — it’s a genuinely exceptional way to spend 17 hours on the Doha–Auckland sector.
At 90,000 Avios via Qatar Privilege Club, you’re paying a premium over some alternatives, but with near-zero fuel surcharges. Cash equivalents London–Auckland in Qsuites frequently exceed £4,000–6,000 one-way. The value per Avios is strong, and the product justifies the cost in a way that fewer redemptions can honestly claim.
Why Qatar Privilege Club specifically? Qatar Privilege Club prices its own metal awards (Qatar-operated Qsuites) at lower surcharges than if you were to book the same Qatar flight via BA Executive Club. Always transfer to Qatar Privilege Club before booking Qsuites. The Avios transfer is instant at 1:1.
The Doha connection lounge advantage: One of the underrated bonuses of routing via Doha is access to the Al Mourjan Business Lounge — one of the finest airport lounges in the world — during your connection. I’ve reviewed it in detail on the blog. If you’re flying Qsuites, you’re staying at Al Mourjan. Plan for at least a 3-hour connection if you want to make the most of it.
90,000 Avios to get all the way to Australia is honestly unbeatable value ! BA charges almost double that, not even factoring in their higher surcharges !
Availability reality: Qsuites award space is limited and competitive. The 355-day rule applies firmly here. Set up alerts via ExpertFlyer or Seats.aero if you’re flexible on dates.
3. Finnair Business Class: Singapore → Helsinki (and beyond)
Cabin: Finnair AirLounge Business Class (A350) Book via: BA Executive Club or Finnair Plus Avios cost: 62,500 one-way Unique feature: Free Helsinki stopover available | Free onward connection to 20+ European cities
This is one of the most underappreciated Avios redemptions available — and one of the very few longhaul routes completely untouched by BA’s December 2025 devaluation.
Finnair’s A350 Business Class — the AirLounge product — features reverse-herringbone seating, excellent Finnish-Scandinavian catering, and one of the quieter business class cabins on a longhaul flight. The Singapore–Helsinki sector is roughly 12 hours, giving you a full sleep and a proper meal service.
The stopover trick that most articles miss: You can build a free stopover in Helsinki on a Finnair Avios award, then connect onward to almost any European destination — Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam — on a separate Finnair short-haul sector for minimal extra cost. Effectively, you’re booking SIN–HEL plus a HEL–LHR (or wherever) connection, and Finnair prices the whole itinerary as one award. This is a legitimate trip routing that opens up a free Helsinki city break within a longer journey.
Finnair is quite a unique airline with a unique product in the form of the AirLounge. Some people might miss the extra controls you get from more traditional seats, but for that - you get so much extra space and flexibility to use your space how you want !
4. Qatar Airways Qsuites: Singapore / Asia → Europe
Cabin: Qsuites Business Class Book via: Qatar Privilege Club Avios cost: 75,000 one-way | Low surcharges Routes: Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo, Hong Kong → London, Paris, Frankfurt, Zürich
The same Qsuites product as redemption #2, but on the Asia–Europe routing. At 75,000 Avios via Qatar Privilege Club, this is a strong value redemption for any reader positioned in Asia, or for those building a round-the-world itinerary on Avios.
The cash comparison: Singapore–London in Qsuites regularly prices above £3,000–5,000 one-way. At 75,000 Avios with minimal fees, the value per Avios is exceptional.
Routing consideration: The Doha hub means a connection at Hamad International, which again gives you Al Mourjan access. For a SIN–DOH–LHR routing with a deliberate connection of 4–6 hours, you’re effectively adding a lounge experience that rivals some airport hotels.
5. Cathay Pacific Business Class: Asia Intra-Region
Cabin: Cathay Pacific Business Class (A350 / 777) Book via: Qatar Privilege Club Avios cost: From 22,000 one-way (e.g. Singapore–Hong Kong) Key advantage: ~33% cheaper than booking the same route via BA Executive Club
This is one of the most overlooked Avios opportunities for anyone travelling within Asia. Qatar Privilege Club prices Cathay Pacific intra-Asia awards at significantly lower rates than British Airways does for identical flights. The Singapore–Hong Kong route — one of the busiest premium routes in Asia — prices at around 22,000 Avios via Qatar Privilege Club vs approximately 32,500 via BA Executive Club for the same seat on the same flight.
Cathay’s regional business class product is excellent — the A350 features a fully flat bed even on short sectors, and the catering and service quality are consistently strong.
Who this is most relevant for: UK-based readers building a multi-leg Asia itinerary — say, flying into Singapore on redemption #4, spending a few days, then connecting to Hong Kong or Tokyo in Cathay Business for a fraction of the Avios a BA booking would cost.
6. JetBlue Mint Suites: US Northeast → Caribbean
Cabin: JetBlue Mint Business Class (Suites configuration) Book via: Qatar Privilege Club Avios cost: 26,000 one-way | Lie-flat suites Routes: JFK / BOS → Aruba, St Lucia, St Maarten, Barbados, Nassau
For US-based readers (or UK readers with a transatlantic connection), JetBlue Mint represents arguably the best short-haul premium points value anywhere in North America. At 26,000 Avios via Qatar Privilege Club for a fully lie-flat suite seat to the Caribbean — on flights that are typically 3.5–4.5 hours — the value per Avios and value per flying hour are both exceptional.
Cash prices for Mint Suites to the Caribbean regularly exceed $800–1,200 one-way during peak travel periods. The suite configuration includes a closing door, a proper lie-flat bed (unusual for such a short sector), and Delmonaco curated snacks and drinks service.
Important caveat: This redemption requires booking via Qatar Privilege Club, and online booking can be glitchy. If you encounter errors searching online, call Qatar Airways directly — phone agents can typically book this without issue.
JetBlue is an airline I'm yet to fly, and it is high on my list when I can next make it align with one of my trips !
7. Qatar Airways Qsuites: Doha to Bangkok, Singapore or Colombo
Cabin: Qsuites Business Class Book via: Qatar Privilege Club Avios cost: 50,000 one-way | No fuel surcharges Bonus: Qatar Premium Lounge access at Bangkok / Singapore
A shorter Qsuites redemption that works particularly well as a segment within a longer Asia itinerary. At 50,000 Avios with zero fuel surcharges, the Doha–Bangkok or Doha–Singapore sector gives you roughly 6–7 hours in the world’s best business class product.
The Bangkok connection is especially valuable: I’ve reviewed the Qatar Premium Lounge at Suvarnabhumi on the blog — it’s one of the better airline-operated lounges in Southeast Asia, and you’ll be in it both directions if you’re transiting through Bangkok.
British Airways Redemptions
A note before this section: BA-operated redemptions come with the fuel surcharge reality. Where I include them, the value proposition survives that surcharge — either because the cash price is high enough, or because a 2-4-1 companion voucher changes the maths entirely.
8. BA Club Suite / Club World: London → Cape Town or Johannesburg
Cabin: Club Suite (some aircraft) or Club World (older 777s) Book via: BA Executive Club Avios cost: ~99,000 off-peak | ~110,000 peak | 2-4-1 eligible Surcharge reality: ~£395 each way with Reward Flight Saver capping the co-pay
South Africa is one of the few longhaul BA routes where the Avios redemption makes compelling sense despite the surcharges. Cash fares London–Johannesburg or London–Cape Town regularly exceed £2,500–4,000 return in Club World, which means even after the Reward Flight Saver co-pay of ~£395 each way, you’re extracting real value.
The overnight routing — typically 10.5–11 hours southbound — means you’re essentially paying for a flat bed and a night’s sleep. Used well, a BA Club Suite redemption to South Africa is genuinely excellent value.
A word on the product: BA’s Club Suite, which features a closing door and direct aisle access, operates on some South Africa rotations. Club World (the older reverse herringbone without a door) operates on others. Search your specific aircraft on Seat Guru or SeatMap before booking — the difference in product quality is significant. I’ve flown the BA A380 Club World to Johannesburg and reviewed it on the blog. The product is dated but functional; the Club Suite is a meaningful step up.
Off-peak windows for South Africa: March–May and September–November are typically off-peak on this route. School holidays in July and December push prices into peak territory.
I recently flew the classic BA A380 Club World, possibly for the last time as they will all be refurbished by early 2027! I had a lovely flight even though some seats are faulty ! If you are remotely sentimental about the product that revolutionised Business Class travel, book a flight before it's too late!
9. BA First Class: London Heathrow → New York or Boston
Cabin: British Airways First Class (777-200ER or 787) Book via: BA Executive Club Avios cost: 75,000 off-peak | 136,000 peak | 2-4-1 eligible Surcharge reality: Higher than Club World — budget £600–800 each way in surcharges
This is the most surprising pricing quirk in the entire BA award chart: off-peak BA First Class to New York costs fewer Avios than Club World on the same route. First Class at 75,000 Avios off-peak vs 80,000 for Club World off-peak. The difference is small, but it means if you’re redeeming off-peak and can access First Class availability, it’s an obvious choice.
The Concorde Room at Heathrow Terminal 5 sweetens the deal considerably. As a First Class passenger, you have access to the most exclusive lounge in the BA network — and in my opinion, one of the best airport experiences in the UK. I’ve reviewed it on the blog.
The honest caveat about BA First Class availability: It’s notoriously limited on New York routes, which are BA’s most commercially valuable. Award availability tends to appear either 355 days in advance (book the moment it opens) or within 2–4 weeks of departure as unsold inventory releases. The middle window — 1–6 months out — is the worst time to search. Set up ExpertFlyer alerts and be patient.
Surcharge context: BA First Class surcharges to New York are higher than Club World. Budget accordingly — the Reward Flight Saver cap doesn’t make these redemptions cheap, but cash First Class to New York regularly clears £5,000–8,000 one-way, which recalibrates the value calculation.
Everybody loves a good moan about BA and BA First Class in particular, but there is no denying that it is one of the most accessible First Class in the skies, and yet once in a while when you get a good crew and food, it can feel just as good as the best First Class services in the skies !
Oneworld Partner Redemptions via BA
10. Japan Airlines Sky Suite: London → Tokyo Haneda
Cabin: JAL Sky Suite Business Class Book via: BA Executive Club (ba.com) Avios cost: ~77,000 off-peak | Book at 330 days out Notes: Compare fees vs Finnair Plus before booking — pricing can vary
Japan Airlines’ business class product — the Sky Suite — is one of the finest in oneworld. The 1-2-1 staggered flat bed configuration, the Bose noise-cancelling headphones, the kaiseki catering on Japan-origin flights, the meticulous service — it’s a cabin that regulars genuinely rave about, and one that’s dramatically underrepresented in UK travel writing.
At ~77,000 Avios via BA, this is a significant Avios spend. But compare it to the cash fare — JAL Business Class London–Tokyo regularly lists above £5,000–7,000 return — and the value holds up.
Booking reality: JAL releases award space to partners at 330 days out rather than 355. Mark your calendar. Space is genuinely limited on peak dates (Golden Week, August, and over New Year particularly). Midweek flights and shoulder season dates have better availability.
Compare before booking: Run the same search via Finnair Plus before settling on BA. Finnair prices some JAL routes differently, and fees can vary.
11. Aer Lingus Business Class: Dublin / Shannon → US East Coast
Cabin: Aer Lingus Business Class (A330 / A321XLR) Book via: BA Executive Club or AerClub Avios cost: ~50,000 off-peak to East Coast | ~62,500 to West Coast Hidden gem: US Pre-clearance in Dublin — land into US domestic terminals
This is genuinely the most underrated redemption on this entire list — and one that almost nobody covers well.
Aer Lingus operates transatlantic flights from Dublin and Shannon to New York JFK, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and several other US gateways. The product — particularly on the newer aircraft — is solid business class. But the reason this makes the list isn’t the product. It’s the US Pre-clearance facility at Dublin Airport.
When you fly transatlantic from Dublin, you clear US Customs and Border Protection in Dublin before departure. When you land in the US, you arrive into a domestic terminal — bypassing the international arrivals queue entirely. For anyone who has spent 90 minutes in the immigration queue at JFK after a transatlantic flight, the value of this cannot be overstated.
How to access this redemption from the UK: Position to Dublin on a short BA or Ryanair flight the night before (Dublin is 1h20m from Heathrow). Spend a night in Dublin — it’s a genuinely enjoyable city — and depart the following morning in Aer Lingus Business Class with US Pre-clearance. The total Avios spend, including a Club Europe positioning flight from London to Dublin if you want to add it, still undercuts many alternative transatlantic routings.
12. Qatar Airways First Class: Doha → London, Paris or Zürich
Cabin: Qatar Airways First Class (777) Book via: Qatar Privilege Club Avios cost: 64,500 one-way | No fuel surcharges Bonus: Al Safwa First Class Lounge access in Doha
Qatar First Class is one of the most debated products in premium aviation — not because it’s bad, but because Qsuites has raised the bar so high that the 777 First Class suite can feel underwhelming relative to the Qatar brand promise.
That said, at 64,500 Avios with zero fuel surcharges and access to the Al Safwa First Class Lounge in Doha — which I’ve reviewed and ranked as one of the finest airport experiences in the world — this remains a legitimately excellent redemption. Cash prices for Qatar First London–Doha–onwards regularly clear £4,000+ one-way.
The Al Safwa factor: For anyone who has never experienced a true First Class airport lounge, Al Safwa at Hamad International is a genuine revelation. Private dining room, à la carte menu, exceptional service, and a calm that’s utterly disconnected from the terminal outside. I’ve written a full review on the blog. Build a long connection in Doha specifically to spend time there.
What to Avoid: The Worst Avios Redemptions
No competitor covers this well. Most “best Avios” guides focus entirely on the good. But knowing where not to spend Avios is equally valuable — possibly more so for readers who are sitting on a large balance and worried about wasting it.
Avios for shopping, upgrades, or hotels: The value per Avios on non-flight redemptions is typically 0.3–0.5p per point — a fraction of what you can extract from a well-chosen flight redemption at 1.5–2.5p+ per Avios. Never spend Avios in the BA Avios eStore, on seat upgrades, or on hotel stays unless you’re desperate to use expiring points.
Short-haul economy on off-peak dates: At off-peak pricing (non school holidays, August), short-haul economy Avios redemptions become poor value. The Avios pricing brackets aren’t particularly cheap, and you’re spending points you could be saving for a longhaul premium cabin. Off-peak short-haul in Club Europe is a different story — more on that below.
BA longhaul economy in off-peak season: At 100,000+ Avios return for economy in peak season, you’re spending serious points for a non-flat-bed experience. The same Avios could buy you Iberia Business Class one-way to the US (redemption #1 above). Always ask whether the Avios you’re spending on economy could get you somewhere shorter in business class instead.
Domestic US flights on American Airlines via BA: At 11,000–26,500 Avios each way for domestic US flights on AA — where “first class” means a wider economy seat with a snack — the value is extremely poor. Use cash or AAdvantage miles for domestic US travel and save Avios for international premium cabin redemptions.
Last-minute longhaul on BA at peak pricing: Peak Avios pricing on BA is genuinely punishing — 136,000 Avios for First Class to New York in peak season. Unless you have a 2-4-1 voucher and this is the flight you’ve always wanted, there are almost always better uses of 136,000 Avios.
The Short-Haul Sweet Spots: Often Overlooked
Most Avios guides focus exclusively on longhaul. But there are genuine short-haul sweet spots — particularly within Europe — that are worth knowing, especially for UK readers who travel frequently within the continent.
Club Europe off-peak within Europe: BA prices Club Europe redemptions to many European destinations at 10,000–16,000 Avios return off-peak. For cities where a flexible economy cash fare is expensive (London–Madrid, London–Athens, London–Istanbul), a Club Europe redemption can represent excellent value — particularly when you add Heathrow lounge access (T5 lounges for Club Europe passengers) to the equation.
Dublin routing (see above) for transatlantic: Not strictly short-haul, but the Dublin positioning trick makes Aer Lingus transatlantic accessible in a way most UK readers don’t realise.
How to Find and Book Avios Award Space
The best redemption means nothing if you can’t find the seats. Here’s how I search:
BA.com: The best starting point for BA-operated and partner flights bookable via Executive Club. Search with flexible dates where possible — the calendar view shows Avios pricing across a month, which makes spotting off-peak windows easy.
Iberia.com: Essential for Iberia-operated redemptions (see redemption #1). BA.com doesn’t always surface Iberia award space accurately. Search directly on iberia.com after transferring Avios to Iberia Plus.
Qatar.com: Necessary for booking Qatar-priced Qsuites and partner awards via Qatar Privilege Club. Transfer Avios first, then search and book via the Qatar site.
Seats.aero and Point.me: Paid tools that aggregate award availability across multiple programmes simultaneously. If you’re flexible on dates and trying to find Qsuites or JAL First Class availability, these are worth the subscription for a month while you’re actively searching.
ExpertFlyer: The gold standard for availability alerts. Set an alert for a specific flight, cabin class, and date range — ExpertFlyer emails you when space opens up. Essential for the 355-day strategy on partner routes.
A Note on the December 2025 BA Devaluation
In December 2025, British Airways repriced much of its award chart upward — some longhaul routes by 10–25% in Avios terms. This is the most significant devaluation to the BA programme since the distance-based pricing overhaul years prior.
The practical impact on this guide: most of the redemptions I’ve highlighted above either survived the devaluation unchanged (Finnair, partner bookings via Qatar Privilege Club) or remain compelling despite the new pricing (BA First Class to New York off-peak, South Africa). The redemptions that were hit hardest were mid-range BA-operated routes — particularly to the US, Canada, and Caribbean — where Avios costs rose without a corresponding improvement in the product or surcharge situation.
My view: the devaluation makes the case for partner airline redemptions — Iberia, Qatar, Cathay via Qatar Privilege Club — even stronger than it was before. BA’s own metal is harder to justify at peak Avios pricing with high surcharges. The sweet spots still exist, but they require more precision to find.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the single best Avios redemption in 2026? The Iberia Business Class redemption from US East Coast cities to Madrid at 40,500 Avios with minimal fees is the strongest pure value redemption in the programme right now. If you’re UK-based and want longhaul premium, Qatar Qsuites via Qatar Privilege Club to Asia or Australia is the best product-to-Avios ratio.
Do Avios expire in 2026? Avios expire after 36 months of account inactivity in the British Airways Executive Club. As long as you earn or spend Avios at least once every 36 months, your balance is safe. A small transaction — even transferring 100 Avios to a partner — resets the clock.
Can I combine Avios from different programmes? Yes — Avios transfer 1:1 between British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Qatar Privilege Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, and Finnair Plus. You can consolidate Avios from multiple programmes into whichever account you want to book from. Transfers are free and typically instant.
What is the best way to book Qatar Qsuites with Avios? Transfer Avios to Qatar Privilege Club (1:1, instant), then search and book on qatarairways.com. This gives you Qatar’s own pricing on Qsuites, which comes with minimal fuel surcharges versus booking the same Qatar flight via BA Executive Club.
Is the BA 2-4-1 companion voucher still worth using in 2026? Yes — particularly on the Iberia Business Class redemption (#1 above) and BA longhaul routes where cash prices are high. The companion voucher halves the Avios cost for a second passenger, which on a 99,000 Avios South Africa return, for example, represents tens of thousands of saved Avios. My full breakdown of companion voucher value is here: [link to companion voucher article].
What happened to Avios redemptions in December 2025? British Airways devalued its award chart in December 2025, repricing many routes upward by 10–25%. The changes hit BA-operated longhaul routes hardest. Partner airline redemptions via Iberia Plus and Qatar Privilege Club were largely unaffected. The sweet spots in this guide are all post-devaluation prices.
Should I book now or wait for prices to drop? Avios programmes only ever go in one direction: they devalue over time, not improve. The best strategy is to collect Avios with a specific redemption in mind and book it at 355 days out when availability peaks. Waiting almost never pays off in loyalty programmes — the currency is always worth more today than it will be in 12 months.
