International airfares have been climbing steadily for the last few years, and the Middle East crisis has only made it worse, pushing airlines to hike points redemption costs too. It’s got to the point where some families are quietly reconsidering whether that long haul trip is worth it this year.
Which is exactly why this one caught my eye. It’s a promotion I’ve shared on my socials for years, then it vanished completely in 2025. Like a lot of you, I assumed it was gone for good. Turns out I was wrong. United and American Express have brought it back, and it’s every bit as good as it used to be…
The Offer
If you hold an American Express Platinum or Preferred Gold card, check your Amex app or online account for a United Airlines offer ( you’ll need to save it to your card to activate it).
The terms:
- Spend £700 or more on United Airlines, get £300 back in statement credit
- Your journey must depart from a UK airport
- Valid across United’s full network
- Works on Economy, Premium Economy, Business/Polaris
- Must be booked and fully charged by 23rd October 2026
My advice: save the offer to your card today, even if you haven’t decided where you’re going yet. There’s no downside to having it sitting there.
On timing, I’d personally aim to have everything booked and charged by the 22nd rather than cutting it fine on the 23rd, just in case United’s system is slow to process your payment.
How to Get the Most Out of It
The maths here reward precision. The biggest effective rebate comes from spending as close to £700 as possible, since anything above that threshold doesn’t earn you extra credit, you’re still capped at £300 back.

A quick worked example: economy fares to New York are often well under £700 return, so they simply won’t trigger the credit. West Coast and Central America routes, on the other hand, comfortably clear £700 once you add checked luggage, making them the sweet spot if Economy is your priority..
I’ve personally used offers like this before to book United Polaris and still land a circa 15-20% effective rebate. Business fares are running high at the moment though, so realistically you’re looking at closer to 10% if you go for Polaris right now.
Premium Economy or Premium Plus might actually be the happier middle ground this time round, with some fares in the £1,100-£1,300 return range still handing you back a decent chunk, a New York example that is widely available currently..
Is United Actually Any Good?
If you haven’t flown United recently, or have avoided them out of habit, it’s worth resetting your expectations. I’ve flown their Premium and Business Class products several times over the last few years, and of the big three US carriers, I consistently rate United as the most reliable.
I’ve even flown them in Economy on a last minute daytime trip to New York and came away pleasantly surprised, decent seats, solid IFE, food and snacks that were more than acceptable, and a genuinely friendly crew..

Their new Polaris 2.0 and Polaris Studios cabins launched this year, and personally I think they’ve made United a genuinely competitive luxury option now.
Catering in Business Class is still the weak point in my view, but their lounges more than make up for it. In the current climate of elevated fares, this United x Amex offer is a genuinely rare rebate, and one of the better statement credit offers around at the moment. The catch is you need one of the two Amex cards above. If you’ve got a long haul trip planned for later this year or early next, it’s worth saving the offer now while it’s live.

Do I need to activate this offer before booking?
Yes. Log into your Amex app or account, find the United Airlines offer, and save/activate it to your card before you book. It won’t apply retroactively.

Is the offer open to everyone?
This is available to Amex Platinum and Gold card holders. But do save it to your account, as it’s only available to the first 30,000 card holders to save it. After that threshold is met, the offer will simply disappear from others accounts.
Does it have to be a return flight departing the UK?
Your journey needs to depart from a UK airport, but beyond that you can fly anywhere in United’s network, and even book an open jaw return to somewhere else in Europe !
Which cabin gets the best rebate?
Economy fares priced just over £700 give you the highest percentage rebate. Premium Economy and Polaris still work, but the percentage back is lower the more you spend above the £700 threshold.
