British Airways Lounge Reception at Gatwick

British Airways Club Lounge Gatwick South: Best Lounge in Gatwick

Updated on June 10th, 2026 at 05:39 pm

Let me be direct about something upfront: the British Airways Club Lounge at Gatwick South Terminal is significantly better than the Heathrow Galleries North and South lounges. Calmer, less crowded, more pleasant in almost every measurable way. If you have been putting off flying from Gatwick because you assumed the lounge experience would be a step down, it is not. For most passengers it is a step up.

I have visited twice now, most recently in 2024. I generally avoid Gatwick when I have a choice, purely because as an avgeek Heathrow is simply more interesting. But the lounge here has made me considerably more open to it when flying BA. Here is everything you need to know.

Quick Verdict: BA Club Lounge Gatwick South

A well-designed, genuinely calm lounge that punches above its size. Better atmosphere than both Heathrow Galleries Club lounges, food on par with Heathrow, and a recent bar addition that was not there on my visit. Well worth arriving early for.

Design and atmosphere 8.5/10
Food and drink 7/10
Facilities 7.5/10
Crowds and noise 9/10
Overall 8/10

Read on for full layout guide, how to find it, food photos, facilities and how it compares to the Heathrow lounges.

Location and How to Get There

Getting to the BA lounge at Gatwick South is the one part of this experience that trips people up, because the instinctive route after security is the wrong one.

When you clear security, do not go down the stairs with everyone else. The majority of passengers head straight down toward duty free, and that route takes considerably longer to reach the lounge. Instead, turn immediately left through the first set of doors right after security and follow the lounge signs from there.

The Club and First Lounge is on the upper mezzanine level above the main terminal floor.

The entrance has the familiar BA branding and a reception desk that serves both the Club Lounge on the right and the First Lounge on the left.

Opening hours: 5am to 8.30pm daily. Hours can vary by season depending on flight schedules, so always confirm on the oneworld lounge finder before travelling.

Who Can Access the Lounge

Access requirements are the same as all BA Club lounges across the network:

  • Flying on a scheduled British Airways flight in First, Club World or Club Europe
  • A Silver or Gold Member of the British Airways Executive Club on a scheduled flight operated by British Airways or a oneworld partner
  • A Sapphire or Emerald member of any oneworld airline frequent flyer programme on a scheduled British Airways or oneworld flight

Sapphire and Emerald members may bring one guest.

This means passengers flying Qatar Airways from Gatwick, for example, can access this lounge on oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status. Worth knowing given Qatar’s Gatwick operation.

Layout and Atmosphere

Through the sliding doors you step into a stylish reception area carrying the same design language as British Airways’ Singapore Lounge. The scheme is a few years old at this point but it still reads as modern and considered rather than dated.

Turn right and you move through into the main lounge spaces. The first room has a smart, slightly muted palette. I particularly like the wine display stands that double up as zone dividers — a small design detail that adds warmth without trying too hard.

Further in, the lounge opens up with more natural light and a good variety of sofa and lounger seating.

It is not an especially large lounge, but the layout makes good use of the space and the partitioned zones prevent it from ever feeling like one big open room. There is a staircase toward the rear leading up to a mezzanine level.

On my last visit the mezzanine level was cordoned off ( as you can see in picture above ) and not accessible to general lounge guests. It appears to be opened selectively based on passenger numbers or operational need. If you arrive and it is open, it is worth heading up as it tends to be quieter than the ground floor.

The thing that struck me most on both visits is how low the ambient noise level is here. The staff keep on top of clearing and replenishing, the space never feels overwhelmed, and the decibel level is noticeably lower than anything you will encounter in the Heathrow Galleries lounges. For a BA lounge, that alone makes it worth knowing about.

From 2026, British Airways is rolling out a major lounge refresh programme starting with all eight Heathrow lounges, after which Gatwick is expected to follow. The new global lounge concept has already made its debut at the BA Miami Lounge and it looks genuinely impressive. This lounge will benefit from that programme in time, but it does not need it urgently. It already works well.

Food, Drink and the New Bar

When it comes to catering, BA has kept things consistent here. There are several self-service refreshment areas around the lounge where you can fix yourself a drink, with a choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options on par with the bigger Heathrow lounges.

There is a good range of seating options for eating: booths work well for families or groups, and there is plenty of higher stool seating for those who want to eat quickly before a flight.

The food choices are near identical to what you will find in the Heathrow Galleries Club Lounges. On my morning visit there was a solid breakfast spread: fresh fruits, yogurts, hot items and pastries.

Breakfast is nothing exciting, but it does the job well.

The scrambled eggs are consistently good, the fruit selection is fresh, and the classics are all present.

My one recurring wish is that BA would offer more alternatives for passengers who do not eat pork, particularly given how many of their routes to Asia, the Gulf and beyond carry passengers for whom that matters.

The New Bar (Post-2024)

Since my last visit in 2024, British Airways has opened a new dedicated bar area within the lounge.

By all accounts it features higher ceilings, a more cocktail bar-style layout, and a seating configuration quite different from the rest of the lounge. I

have not personally photographed this space and will update this review fully on my next visit. If you want to see the bar in its current form ahead of your trip, The Alviator has good coverage of it from their November 2025 visit.

Showers, WiFi and Other Facilities

The lounge covers all the standard bases. There is a dedicated kids play room, which is a genuine plus if you are travelling with younger children.

There is a dedicated work room with desk seating and power. On my visit it was completely empty, which reflects Gatwick’s predominantly leisure-focused passenger mix. BA does fly to some key business destinations from here including New York, but the vibe in this lounge is decidedly holiday rather than corporate.

British Airways Lounge Gatwick Work Areas

Showers are available and kitted out with the same Elemis amenities you find across other BA lounges. Quality is consistent and the restrooms are well maintained.

On WiFi: it works, but do not expect anything fast. Multiple reviewers have flagged this as the lounge’s most notable weak point and my experience was consistent with that. Streaming is unreliable. For browsing and messaging it is fine.

There are also good runway-facing window seats if you want to watch the traffic while you wait, which given Gatwick’s single runway operation provides surprisingly interesting viewing during busy periods.

How Does It Compare to the Heathrow Lounges?

This is the question most BA frequent flyers will have, so here is my honest take having used all of them.

Lounge Atmosphere Crowds Food Overall
BA Club T5B Heathrow Excellent Very low Good Best BA Club lounge
BA Club Lounge Gatwick South Very good Low Good Strong second
BA Galleries North T5 Noisy High Good Fine but chaotic
BA Galleries South T5 Noisy Very high Good Avoid if possible

The Gatwick Club Lounge sits clearly above both Heathrow Galleries North and South on atmosphere and crowd levels. The food quality is broadly the same across all of them. The one lounge that beats Gatwick is the BA Club Lounge at T5B, which is in its own category for tranquility — but that requires being in the T5B satellite building, which is only relevant if your flight departs from there. For Gatwick departures this lounge is the clear winner and better than most passengers expect it to be.

Overall Thoughts

I found this a genuinely pleasant lounge and a far cry from the chaos of the Heathrow Galleries North and South experiences. The calmer atmosphere, the considered layout and the lower crowd levels make it easy to actually relax here rather than just endure the pre-flight wait. On both visits I have been pleasantly surprised by how much I have enjoyed it.

The new bar addition since 2024 is something I will cover properly on my next visit, as is the mezzanine level which was cordoned off on my visits but appears to offer additional seating when open. Both are reasons to revisit and update this review during 2026.

Finally, note there is also a separate First Class Lounge section accessible from the same reception, reserved for BA Executive Club Gold and oneworld Emerald members. I will cover that separately when I get to use it properly.

This lounge has made me notably more willing to fly from Gatwick — with BA itself or indeed Qatar, which also uses the South Terminal. If you have been dismissing Gatwick as the inferior London airport option, the lounge experience here is not the reason to avoid it.
