Beautiful Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk

I have been to Dubai more times than I can count, luckily mostly before it became infested with desperate social media influencer types left, right and centre! I have mostly stayed in apartments or villas but have done a fair few hotel chains too.

This trip was all about the delayed Expo 2020 that moved into 2022, I visited during the second last week. I specifically wanted to stay in a Sofitel. The Sofitel’s in Palm and Jumeirah only had rooms above £800pn. I booked this in the Luxury Club Room with Club Millesime (Club Lounge) for just under £300pn for 3 nights. On the plus side the hotel has airport take-off views from the lounges at the top.

Arrival & Check-In

The evening before I got a surprise call from a lovely lady from the hotel Concierge enquiring about my expected arrival time and if I would like to have an airport pickup. When I informed her of my early morning arrival she was ever so eager to suggest I would be welcome to enjoy breakfast that day too as compliments.

I planned to sleep on my Finnair flight in (I did not review that specific flight), so the additional breakfast appealed and I agreed to the pickup!

After a less than 15 minutes drive from the airport, I was dropped off around 8.30am and asked to go straight up the to level 51 for my private Club Millesime check-in!

As soon as the lift doors opened I was warmly greeted while they took care of all the formalities.

Sofitel Dubai Club Millsime Check in

The room type I booked was not available yet, but was possible to check into a corner Luxury Room of the same category. It took all but 5 minutes to complete check-in.

I was handed my room cards and a nice welcome letter in an envelope as well as given a quick orientation. Then I was shown to the restaurant to have my breakfast.

Once I finished breakfast, I had a quick look around the room and took a shower before I set off for the day.

It was very apparent this was not the room I had booked from the picture I had in my mind. Even though they were similar size (approx 650 square feet) and fittings, the layout was very different.

Sofitel Dubai Luxury Club Room Entrance

As soon as you enter, it almost feels like you are in a 3 room Suite! With the entrance hallway big enough to be its own room, having console table with lamp, a large mirror and coat hanger.

To the left you have what is akin to a walk in closed with the usual slippers, bathroom, extra towels and iron with ironing board.

The room itself is on the right..

At the centre of the room is the king-size Sofitel MyBed, with 2 large bedside tables on each side and then two armchairs and a table seating area by the window.

While it is a big room, the other rectangular shaped middle rooms look bigger in pictures as everything is in linear view.

There was a large well, equipped desk right behind this view that I did not take a picture of..

The whole hotel is a gorgeous blend of ancient Egyptian heritage with modern French chic. Marbled tiles and sculptures such as this golden falcon animate the outsized lobby

Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk Building

The hotel itself is quite a significant tall landmark within the vicinity. It’s shape resembling an Obelisk.  Hotels nearby like Raffels are quite low-rise so you will get sweeping 360 views from probably level 10 up!

Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk: Facilities

Besides the Executive Club Lounges, there are various lounge areas on several floors..

I did not get a chance to check out the Gym or Spa unfortunately, as I spend very little time in the hotel itself.

Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk: Club Millesime Food

As my booking included access to Club Millisime, Sofitel’s answer to Executive Club Lounges. This included breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails for 2 people!

I only managed to have afternoon tea one of the 3 days I stayed, and on second last day decided to invite a friend over to enjoy some evening cocktails and canapes.

The full table service breakfasts were excellent with assortment of fresh juices, coffee and bakeries.

Sofitel Dubai Obelisk Dining Views

Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk: Getting Around Town

For better or worse, the main mode of transport is still driving or taxis. This is gradually changing now. Dubai does have a modern Metro and bus network running now across key areas. The hotel itself is connected to a shopping mall. And the Dubai Frame is nearby too.

The nearest metro station to the hotel is about 6 minutes walk and its about 20 minutes to downtown. I used the Metro most of the time, while it took over an hour to get to the Expo sites on other side of Dubai, taxi would have taken even longer with traffic!

Overall Thoughts

I had a wonderful stay and time at this hotel. Due to my busy schedule with the Expo, I feel like I could easily have stayed a few days longer here to really appreciate all the facilities on offer. The hospitality, services standards and elegant deco were all on point. The hotel is very Dubai but without the epilepsy inducing bling of hotels such as Burj Al Arab.

If this was your first time in Dubai, you would probably want to stay in Jumeirah/Palm or even downtown so can explore and discover more easily. If this is not your first time and you want to explore places like Sharjah/Ajman too, this place would be perfect.
