British Airways A350 At Heathrow
Maximise your Avios and elevate your journey – the smart way.
At Wander Up Front, we love smart travel hacks—and the British Airways Barclays Upgrade Voucher is one of a handful of tools to make you travel better. Alongside the BA Companion Voucher covered here, this voucher allows moving up a cabin class using fewer Avios.
But it’s not always straightforward, with the “Upgrade” part of the name causing much of this confusion, so here’s a lowdown and how you can get the best value from it.
Whilst the name suggests the voucher is used for upgrades – technically it works somewhat differently than a “upgrade” you may be used to with other airlines.
The voucher allows you to book an Avios Reward flight with the Avios cost associated with a lower cabin, i.e booking Business Class for the price of Premium Economy in Avios. There needs to be Avios availability for the Class you want.
You will pay the tax/surcharge element of the class you are flying.
It should really just be called an BA Avios Discount Voucher or Avios Saver Voucher !
As the name would suggest, correctly this time, you can only earn these vouchers via Barclays products. There are three products you can currently do so with:
I currently hold the later two and thus, earn two of these vouchers per year. It lets you upgrade one cabin when booking with Avios on BA-operated flights.
Use cases:
Solo traveller: Upgrade a return Avios booking for one person.
Travelling with someone: Upgrade one leg of the journey for two people.
🕒 Valid for 2 years from the issue date.
Once you have earned your Voucher, it will appear in your BA Club account when you login. It will be visible in the Avios booking pages, specifically on the “Book and Upgrade” tab..
Select to use it and then chose your destination and dates.
On the travel class dropdown, if you want to fly Club World then select Premium Economy or if you want to fly Premium Economy then just select Economy. Here is a table representation of the options:
Book With Avios In | Upgrades To |
---|---|
Economy (Euro Traveller/World Traveller) | Club Europe or Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus) |
Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus) | Business Class (Club Europe/Club World) |
🚫 Cannot upgrade into First Class |
The voucher doesn’t reduce the Avios cost of the base cabin, but lets you fly in a higher cabin for the same Avios – just with the upgraded taxes/fees.
Off-peak long-haul flights in World Traveller Plus → Club World
Example: London to New York + other East Coast or London to Dubai + other Middle East
Without voucher: ~160,000 Avios + £375 (round trip in Club)
With voucher: ~85,000 Avios + £375 (pay for Premium in Avios, fly Club)
Saving 75,000 Avios
Off-peak long-haul flights in World Traveller Plus → Club World
Example: London to Cape Town / Johannesburg / Nairobi
Without voucher: ~180,000 Avios + £475 (round trip in Club)
With voucher: ~95,000 Avios + £475 (pay for Premium in Avios, fly Club)
Two upgraded segments = maximum voucher value
Saving 85,000 Avios
Off-peak long-haul flights in World Traveller Plus → Club World
Example: London to Tokyo
Without voucher: ~200,000 Avios + £550 (round trip in Club)
With voucher: ~100,000 Avios + £550 (pay for Premium in Avios, fly Club)
Two upgraded segments = maximum voucher value
Saving a cool 100,000 Avios !
For Singapore route, you will save 110,000 Avios but the best is off course Sydney which saves a massive 130,000 Avios.
Conversely some of the cheapest and best value Avios Reward flights are to places such as Kuwait/Abuja etc but these will accordingly, have lower saving potential with this voucher.
Short-haul economy to Club Europe
Understandably, the difference between Economy and Club Europe pricing can is smaller, giving little value
The Barclays Upgrade Voucher can be exceptional value given how relatively easy it can be to earn for some – especially with Barclays Premier Account.
On long-haul routes, if you’re strategic you can realistically save between 75,000 to 130,000 in Avios. Equating to a minimum value of £750 pounds for these long haul flights.
Having said all this, BA Barclays Upgrade Voucher Worth to YOU could be a personal call and destinations you WANT to travel to. Maybe you only travel within Europe and do not have any BA or oneWorld status – in this case, the voucher is worth more to you than someone who already has status to enjoy fast track, extra baggage, lounge access etc
